What is sterling silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% by weight of silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Pure silver is too soft for producing jewellery, therefore the silver is alloyed with copper to give it strength, while at the same time preserving the beauty of the precious metal.
Care for your sterling silver.
Always store your sterling silver jewellery in tarnish prevention bags or cloths. The treated cloth slows down the tarnishing process and keeps the jewellery from rubbing against harder jewellery that might scratch it. Keep your sterling silver in a dry, cool place. Use polishing cloths to clean your jewellery. You may have heard that you can use toothpaste to clean sterling silver, but don't do that! Toothpaste is abrasive and can scratch your jewellery.
